The job of a defence lawyer is to persuade the judge (and jury if relevant). That's what they are there for.

I certainly agree that judges have a difficult task in deciding what punishments to give, however I believe they allow themselves to be persuaded by those defending the accused.

In the third example I gave. The defence told the judge that the man who punched the baby was under great pressure because his own daughter was ill.

Being a judge is a terribly difficult thing with so many factors to consider. I'm sure they took all the relevant factors into account when making these sentences.

I would like to mention three recent cases which involved abuse of children.

1) A man who purposely immersed a very young child in a bath of scalding water received a sentence of three years, of which he will probably serve two, if that.
