That's what they are there for.

In the third example I gave. The defence told the judge that the man who punched the baby was under great pressure because his own daughter was ill.

Even though I feel very sorry for the daughter who is ill, that in no way can excuse him for taking it out on a defenceless 20 month old baby.

There can be no extenuating circumstances for someone who attacks a child in that way.

In addition what extenuating circumstances could there be for intentionally placing a little child into a scalding hot bath or a man who ran a paedophile ring and had abused children himself?

It is the victims we must consider and the pain and emotional trauma they have to endure, not those who inflict such suffering.

It is not 'why' did these people commit such terrible crimes but those crimes were committed and the perpetrator must be properly punished, firstly to teach them that this kind of thing will never be tolerated and secondly to send a message to everyone else letting them know that this type of crime will be met with severe penalties.

I know for a fact that if a child of mine was attacked by an adult and that adult virtually got away with what he/she did, I would want to know why.

I am sure the vast majority of people would feel the same way.

I'm sure they took all the relevant factors into account when making these sentences.

Thank you for your comment.

I would like to mention three recent cases which involved abuse of children.

1) A man who purposely immersed a very young child in a bath of scalding water received a sentence of three years, of which he will probably serve two, if that.

The child had to endure agonies of pain, severe scalding and will probably be scarred for the rest of its life.

2) A man who was responsible for running an on-line paedophile ring and also abused children was sentenced to an 'indeterminate' term in prison. However the Judge's recommendation was that he only serve at least 3.5 years.

3) A babysitter was sentenced to six months for repeatedly punching a 20 month old toddler whilst he was laying in his cot.

I am afraid I cannot agree that the punishment of these three was fair and correct.

This is only three examples of crimes which have been committed against children which I personally feel the punishment does not fit the crimes.
